They’re not French. French Bulldogs actually originated in England, developed from miniature English Bulldogs kept by Nottingham lace workers. When those workers relocated to northern France during the Industrial Revolution, they brought their small bulldogs with them — and the French embraced the breed so enthusiastically that it became associated with Paris rather than Nottingham.

They can’t swim. Their flat faces, heavy heads and compact bodies make French Bulldogs physically incapable of keeping themselves afloat. Most will sink rather than swim. A Frenchie near any open water should always be supervised, and a life jacket is worth having for boating trips.

Most litters are born by caesarean section. French Bulldogs have wide shoulders and narrow hips — a combination that makes natural birth genuinely dangerous for most females. The vast majority of Frenchie puppies are delivered surgically, which adds significantly to breeding costs and should be a factor when choosing a breeder.

One was on the Titanic. A French Bulldog named Gamin de Pycombe was aboard on the night it sank. His owner had insured him for $750 — roughly $20,000 in today’s money. Neither survived.

They ranked 58th out of 130 breeds for obedience intelligence — but that doesn’t mean they’re not smart. Stanley Coren’s rankings measure how quickly dogs obey commands. French Bulldogs are highly intelligent in a different way: they’re perceptive, socially aware, and excellent at reading people. A Brief History

The French Bulldog’s origins lie in 19th century England, where miniature or “toy” bulldogs became popular companions among working-class communities, particularly in the lace-making districts of Nottingham. When the lace industry declined and many workers emigrated to northern France in the 1860s, they took their small bulldogs with them. In France, the dogs were crossed with local ratters, developing the distinctive upright bat ears that now define the breed — and the French fell for them entirely.

By the late 1800s, French Bulldogs were fashionable companions in Parisian society, eventually spreading to Britain and America. The breed was officially recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1898. For most of the 20th century they remained a popular but niche breed. Their explosion to the top of global registrations in recent decades reflects a perfect match between the breed’s personality — compact, low-exercise, sociable, apartment-friendly — and the realities of modern urban life.
